Pizza sMizza

This finicky freelance pizza/food critique reviews every slice of pizza pie sampled from every pizza parlor, independent or franchise, found while measuring the street of M-town in the western part of Illinois. As of Dec '06, she does Columbus, Ohio. She is contemplating to partner with her best friend, Jack, to open a franchise one day, somewhere. While she is more interested in owning a healthier fast food franchise, she agrees with him that this $34billion industry sh*t is pretty lucrative.

On Sbarro, again: Philly Cheese Steak (stuffed pizza)

Ratings (five stars = best or highest)
Pie crust: ***** (extremely good)
Toppings/stuff: **** (surprisingly tasty!)
Pizza sauce: N/A
Overall: ****1/2 (sinfully yummy!)

I did not sample this pie exclusively; I only took a couple of bites, which is enough to enable me to write this review. At first glance, I thought it was a chicken pie, but that does not make sense because it was placed in the pizza section.

At $3.59 + tax, the pie was pretty large and heavy, about 2" thick, and had such a mouth-watering look. If I have a slice for myself, I think I'll be full for the rest of the day. It was steaming hot when placed in the to-go box. No gooey threads, and the pizza situated itself neatly in the box. No spill, no mess.

The crust was fresh and crispy. The bottom was not burned; it was just right. Sprinkles of sesame seeds and basil flakes dotted the top crust sparingly, making it fragrant and tasty, a pretty effective way to whet your appetite. A great pie crust that deserves 5 stars.

The stuff was loaded with seasoned steak, sauteed onion, red peppers, green peppers, mozzarella and some cheddar. Mild to taste, neither too spicy nor bland, just enough to awaken your senses. Very fullfiling, very tasty, 4 stars for being surprisingly good.

Unlike tomato sauce based pizzas, this one either uses white sauce or no sauce at all. I can't remember tasting pizza sauce, but the bottom part had traces of melted mozzarella.

Overall, a great pizza experience (again!). Sbarro really delivers its promise!

On Sbarro: Cheese Pizza

Ratings (five stars = best or highest)
Pie crust: ***** (extremely good)
Toppings: *** (oily good)
Pizza sauce: ****1/2 (almost perfecto!)
Overall: ****1/2 (sinfully yummy!)

At first, I was reluctant to stuff my stomach with another slice of pizza yet too soon. But, I remember there's Sbarro in the Union down the road, so, I said hey why not? When I got there, the cafetaria was packed with students and faculty looking to grab a bite. The Sbarro line was long but I hardly waited because the service was pretty fast. I was kinda excited; this time I'm just going to sample no more than a small slice.

Boy, I was wrong.

I ordered a slice of cheese pizza to go to the lady who was standing behind all those mouth-watering pies. Almost instantly, she scooped up a large wedge of pizza from the tray. As she tried to placed it onto the box, my jaw dropped and I could hardly blink when I saw the size. I thought maybe I looked starving or that she might have felt sorry to see my Asian body, so she chosed the largest pie wedge to stuff me with. Anyway, it cost me $2.19 + tax.

OK, here's the review:
Crust: OMG, it's much, much, much, much crustier and fresher, and hundred times better tasting than that of Godfather's, Pizza Hut's, Papa John's, or any unflavored crusts from other pizza chains. All my thumbs were up as I was savouring every bite of the crusty pie; the bottom and top crust were equally and consistently crusty, fresh tasting, hardly greasy and was baked to perfection. Five stars tops without hesitation or further explanation.

Topping: cheese looked runny when was first placed into the box, but then solidified as it got slightly cooled down. On a closer look, I noticed several oily pools here and there (click on the photo to see). Also, I think the amount of cheese was kind of excessive. I would prefer slightly less cheesy than that, but the superb-tasting of the crust helps to balance out the sight of spill-over cheese. Nevertheless, no gooey, stringy threads, which is good, and the right level of chewyness easily steal three stars. Watch for oil pools, folks... *grin*

Pizza sauce: evenly, though thinly, spread of fresh, great tasting tomato sauce. There was the right level of tangyness and sweetness, which managed to win my approval. It was certainly a very pleasant experience; my tounge danced with joy. I rate it four and a half stars... almost perfecto!

Overall, this pie is sinfully yummy at four and a half stars. It's pretty fullfiling. I left the Union happy and contend for a lunch worth having and a pizza worth tasting.
